What's your New Year's resolution?

Let’s face it, when was the last time you managed to keep a New Year’s resolution? We believe the key to sticking to a goal is picking one that is both reasonable and attainable. If you haven’t yet picked a New Year’s resolution, consider setting one that will improve your oral health!

For example, resolve to brush twice and floss once a day. Good oral hygiene only takes a couple of minutes a day, and can make a big difference in your oral health, as well as your overall health, too! For more oral health-themed resolutions for you and your family, check out this article.

We would love to see what you come up with! Share with us by commenting on this post or on our Facebook page. Whatever your New Year’s Resolution, Drs. Gilleran & Van Fossen, as well as our entire team, wish you all the very best for 2011!

How do you know if you have periodontal disease?

Drs. Gilleran & Van Fossen and our staff will tell you one of the most important steps to improving the care of your gums is recognizing the warning signs for periodontal disease, also known as gum disease.

These can include:

• Gums that appear red or swollen
• Gums that feel tender
• Gums that bleed easily (during brushing or flossing)
• Gums that recede or pull away from the teeth
• Persistent halitosis, or bad breath
• Loose teeth
• Any change in the way teeth come together in the biting position

Our friends at the American Academy of Periodontology created a helpful self-assessment test that can help you determine what your risk is at home. Early detection is critical to avoiding serious and costly dental problems.

Of course, the best way to know for sure what the health of your teeth and gums is would be a visit to our office located in the Chicago Loop.

What are happy patients saying about our office?

Dr. Gilleran and Dr. Van Fossen, serving Chicago's Loop and surrounding areas, have been receiving some great patient reviews lately! Check out what our current patients are saying about our office! If you'd like to leave a short review of our office online, head to our Google Places page or Yelp page! Enjoy your weekend everyone!

"Dr. Amy is extremely kind, gentle, organized and talks to you in a way you can understand. She does not "dumb it down". You walk out feeling really cared for." ~ Cynthia Z.

"I learned about Dr. Gilleran from a co-worker. Her office typically has lunch time appointments available, which is really great with my schedule. All of the staff including Dr. Gilleran are very personable and helpful. I love that they have headphone/cd players if you want to pick out your own music to listen to while they do a cleaning. Now I've taken to bringing my iPod for my appointments. Dr. Gilleran fitted me for a crown and made a pretty icky situation fairly comfortable." ~ Natalie B.

"I've been to quite a few dentists in my lifetime, and Dr. Van Fossen is the best. Great work, very knowledgeable, great personality and amazing dental assistants & hygienists. I'll never go to another dentist." ~ Heidi H.

"I have been seeing Dr. Gilleran since 1994. She considers dentistry a form of artistry. She and her partner Dr. Van Fossen stay on top of all the latest technology. With all the cosmetic dentistry rage, they offer anything you might need or want, but allow you to ask the questions or seek advice. One noteworthy aspect of their treatment is that I always feel well cared for in their office. It is a happy and comfortable office environment with an attentive staff and I NEVER wait more than just a few minutes to be seen. Even if you don't work downtown, they are easy to get to and just off the Red Line. Above every chair there are curious magnets on the light fixtures, mobiles hanging from the ceiling, and artwork created by the dentist herself. The dentists are both just really cool people. The kind you'd like to get to know better." ~ Jame S.

Happy Veteran's Day from Drs. Gilleran & Van Fossen and team

Happy Veteran's Day! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the veterans and those currently on active duty who have put their lives on the line for the freedoms we all enjoy.

In celebration of Veteran’s Day, Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen, as well as our entire team at Chicago Loop's Gilleran and Van Fossen DDS would like to share a few fun facts about our flag, this national holiday, and our country’s history!

-Veteran's Day, a day that was originally called Armistice Day, is a time to thank and honor the men and women who have served in our military.

- President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the official legislation for Veteran's Day on June 1, 1954, changing the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veteran's Day

-There are 23.2 million veterans in the U.S.

-The flag was first approved by Congress on June 14, 1777

-Each of the flag’s colors signify different American values - red is for valor and zeal, white is for hope, purity, and cleanliness of life, and blue is for heaven, loyalty, sincerity, justice, and truth

-Research by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) helped develop the CAT Scan, the cardiac pacemaker, and the “Seattle Foot” to give those hurt the ability to run and jump

-When the flag is displayed next to another flag against a wall, the U.S. flag should be on its own right (on the left side when facing the wall).

-Veteran's Day is often confused with Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a time for remembering and honoring the men and women who died while serving our country, or as a result of injuries that incurred in battle. Veteran's Day honors and gives thanks to all veterans who served in our military.

-There are five states with over 1 million veterans in their population – California, Florida, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania.

Thanks again! We are so thankful for all who have and are currently serving in the U.S. and overseas.

Drs. Gilleran & Van Fossen with the 411 on Halloween treats

For our patients concerned about going overboard on candies this weekend, sugar and other sweets, this post is just for you!

Dr. Gilleran and Dr. Van Fossen, as well as our entire staff will tell you all those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? Candies like Starburst and Skittles are the worst for your teeth since these candies have a low pH value, which is known to ruin enamel.

With Halloween just two days away, we encourage you to try and limit the amount of these candies that you eat, and when you do eat them, either rinse your mouth with water afterward or drink a glass of milk or eat a slice of cheese. If you have any questions over the weekend, ask us on Facebook!

We hope everyone has a fun, safe and scary Halloween!

Patient question: What's Invisalign, and is it right for me? [Video]

We've blogged about Invisalign in earlier posts, but this time around we thought we'd share a helpful video for those who are intrigued by the idea of straightening their teeth without using traditional metal braces. The Invisalign system at Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic and General Dentistry is a state-of-the-art system of clear, removable aligners that we proudly offer to adults and teens at our convenient Chicago Loop office. We have plenty of resources on our website to check out about Invisalign, or give us call at 312-368-8771 to schedule an appointment and learn if this revolutionary new treatment option is right for you!

Not only are the aligners you wear invisible, they are also easily removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in our office getting adjustments. Dr. Amy Van Fossen is a Certified Invisalign® Provider in Chicago.

Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen, supporting National Smile Month

Ah, October has arrived. The leaves are beginning to fall, the days get shorter and all that Halloween candy is beginning to make its rounds. For our staff at Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic and General Dentistry, October is known as National Dental Health Month.

We join our friends at the American Dental Hygienists' Association in spreading the word that good dental habits are easy to develop and even easier to maintain.

This year's theme is “Healthy Habits are Easier than You Think,” which focuses on prevention. Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen know everyone is busy; living a life on-the-go is difficult for most people, but our staff is here to tell you keeping a healthy mouth shouldn’t be.

Your teeth are an important part of your body, and keeping them clean helps keep your mouth and your body healthy. By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet, and visiting our convenient Chicago Loop office on a regular basis, you can have healthy teeth and an attractive smile throughout your entire life.

We encourage you to check out the ADHA's National Dental Hygiene Month website, which provides pointers on keeping your mouth clean and healthy. Lastly, has it been six months since your last visit to Gilleran and Van Fossen DDS? If the answer is yes, we encourage you to give us a call at 312-368-8771 to set up an appointment.

Have a wonderful and relaxing weekend!

Dr. Patricia Gilleran presents: Invisalign and your oral health

When considering treatment options in Chicago, patients often ask us how Invisalign treatment is so different than just getting traditional braces at an orthodontist's office. Well, there are more reasons to smile about Invisalign at Gilleran and Van Fossen DDS than you may know. Invisalign, a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, not only straighten your teeth, but can improve your oral health as well. Here’s how:

Healthy gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.

Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque and even gum disease.

Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.

If you have any questions about Invisalign, just ask Dr. Patricia Gilleran or Dr. Amy Van Fossen during your next visit. Or, you may post your question on our Facebook page! You can also read this article for more information on Invisalign and your oral health.

September is National Gum Care Month!

At Gilleran and Van Fossen DDS, we know that gingivitis - the early stage of periodontal disease - can be difficult to recognize. In fact, most people don't recognize the warning signs - bleeding and swollen gums - as a precursor to gum disease. This month, a national campaign is under way to raise awareness about gum health and periodontal disease, and we wanted to help do our part to spread the word!

Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen will tell you early recognition and action are the most important steps to health gums, and ultimately a health body, too! Studies are published every year linking oral health, including the gums, to the health of other areas of the body, such as your heart. One of the most important steps to improving the care of your gums is recognizing the warning signs for gum disease.

Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen know these can include:

• Gums that appear red or swollen
• Gums that feel tender
• Gums that bleed easily (during brushing or flossing)
• Gums that recede or pull away from the teeth
• Persistent halitosis, or bad breath
• Loose teeth
• Any change in the way teeth come together in the biting position

If you happen to notice any of these signs, please schedule an appointment at our convenient Chicago Loop office by calling 312-368-8771 as soon as possible. Our doctors can take proactive steps to prevent gingivitis and gum disease, while showing you how to improve gum care in your daily oral hygiene habits.

With OraVerse, Dr. Gilleran and Dr. Van Fossen can reverse the numbness of anesthesia!

Our staff at Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic and General Dentistry are pleased to offer our patients the option to reverse the affects of anesthesia at the end of dental procedures. OraVerse, a local anesthetic reversal agent, reverses the effects of anesthesia so that it wears off in approximately 30 minutes, instead of the usual 120 minutes. This is great for those of you who need to get back to work or have important meetings scheduled after your appointment.

This cutting-edge treatment option allows patients to leave our Chicago Loop office without the unpleasant side affects that can result from anesthesia. Dr. Patricia Gilleran and Dr. Amy Van Fossen offer OraVerse at a minimal cost to our patients.

Please give us a call at 312-368-8771 if you have any questions about OraVerse, or if you would like to schedule your next appointment. See you soon!

Drs. Gilleran & Van Fossen present: Foods for healthy gums and healthy hearts

Gum disease, known also as periodontal disease, is far more common than you may think in the U.S. Year after year, new studies emerge that link the effect gum disease can have on your heart, and our staff at Bridgeview Dental have taken notice. Now, we're helping spread the word! One of the simplest steps to achieving healthier gums can be your diet. We recently came across a great article in EatingWell that outlines several options for healthier gums. Included among the suggestions were:

*Raisins
*Green Tea
*Whole Grains

In addition to these foods being gum-friendly, they are healthy foods in general, and a great option to begin integrating into your diet more this fall. Hope this helps! Have a wonderful weekend!

National Smile Week!

August 9-13 is National Smile Week, and an ideal time to remind patients of Dr. Gilleran and Dr. Van Fossen to practice good oral hygiene to keep those teeth shining and happy! This includes brushing and flossing regularly, avoiding foods that can stain your teeth such as tea and coffee and visiting our convenient Chicago Loop office every six months or as recommended.

The American Dental Association, or ADA, recommends the following for good oral hygiene:

• Brush your teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won't do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

• Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Tooth decay–causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This helps remove the sticky film on teeth called plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.

• Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.

• Visit Drs. Gilleran & Van Fossen regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

Lastly, a great reason to smile is this: smiling can actually help you live longer according to a new study! Have you visited our office lately for a cleaning or checkup? If not, give us a call at 312-368-8771 to set up an appointment! Summer is a great time for a visit!

Thursday, August 5, 2010

What are you reading this summer?

With summer 2010 in full swing, our staff at Gilleran and Van Fossen DDS want to remind all our patients about the importance of reading. We know it’s easy to keep putting off reading this time of year, but reading during the summer is actually a vital step in brain development. And, it can help you ward off that dreaded “summer slide.”

This week, we thought we’d ask: What's on YOUR summer reading list? What are some of your all-time favorites?

Out of ideas for summer reads? Then check out these summer reading ideas that we came across this week, courtesy of Barnes & Noble.

Happy reading, and be sure to share your summer picks with us on our Facebook page! We hope you're having an outstanding summer!!

Patient question: What should I do if I have an emergency this summer?

Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen know all too well that summer is a season many patients experience dental emergencies - especially while they're on vacation. From a toothache to a chipped tooth to a lost filling, summer brings with it a greater chance of people damaging their teeth when they're out and about. In many cases, there are ways you can handle these occurrences at home before you follow up with a visit with Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen. In some instances a few minutes of attention will be all you need to effectively address a true dental emergency. Here are some common situations patients come across.

Toothaches: Rinse your mouth with warm water and floss to remove any food lodged in your teeth. A pain reliever such as aspirin may be taken to dull the pain. If swelling appears, hold a cold compress to the outside of the mouth or cheek. If your toothache is severe, or lasts longer than one day, schedule an appointment to see us as soon as possible.

Chipped/Broken Teeth: Save any pieces you can. Use a cold compress on the outside of your mouth to relieve pain and swelling, and apply gauze to the area for at least ten minutes if there is bleeding. Visit our office as soon as you can.

Objects Stuck in Teeth: Try flossing to carefully and gently remove the object. Never use a sharp or hard item to remove objects in your teeth; you risk injuring your gums and scratching your teeth. If you are unable to remove the object, visit our office.

Lost Filling: Sugarless gum and over-the-counter dental cement can work as temporary fillings, but be sure to make an appointment with us as soon as you can to replace a filling!

Lost Crown: If you cannot make it in to see us right away, apply a little clove oil to the sensitive area of the tooth with a cotton swab. Then slip the crown back on the tooth using dental cement or denture adhesive to hold it in place. Don’t use any kind of glue on your teeth. Be sure to make an appointment to see us to properly fix the crown as soon as possible.

Abscess: An abscess is a painful pimple-like swelling that usually occurs on your gums near the root of a tooth. Abscesses are caused by infection and can cause serious oral health problems, so come see us right away. In the meantime, try to ease the pain by rinsing your mouth with a saltwater solution of ½ teaspoon salt to 8 ounces of water.

Mouth Injuries: Injuries to the soft-tissue of the mouth such as the cheeks, tongue, and gums often result in bleeding. To stop the bleeding first rinse your mouth with a mild salt water solution. Then use a moistened piece of gauze to apply pressure to the site for 15-20 minutes. Holding a cold compress to the outside of the affected area will help ease pain and control bleeding and swelling. If the bleeding persists see us immediately or visit a hospital emergency room. Continue to apply gauze until you are treated.

Our staff at Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic and General Dentistry will always tell you ignoring any dental problem can quickly increase the risk of permanent damage and the need for more treatment in the future. If you have any concerns, and especially if you experience a persistent dental issue, please give us a call so we can assist you and prevent an emergency.

Didn't see a question you'd like an answer to? Please call us or ask on our Facebook page! For a full list of medical emergencies and how to deal with them, please visit the American Dental Association.

Drs. Gilleran & Van Fossen, protecting you from heat stroke this summer

With the heat wave sweeping the majority of the East coast (and Chicago) this week, we want you to be extra careful when you’re out and about. Ask Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen: what's Invisalign Teen™?

Last week, you may recall, we discussed Invisalign treatment. Today, we thought we'd follow-up and talk a little bit about Invisalign Teen, which works much in the same fashion as its adult counterpart.

Trust us when we say Chicago Loop dentists Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen know that for today's teens, image is everything. After all, in an age and culture when image is so important, the thought of having metal brackets and wires constantly attached to their teeth may intensify the already-delicate confidence of today's teens.

But there's a clear alternative to straightening your teeth the old-fashioned way with braces! Our staff at Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic Dentistry thought we'd remind you that Invisalign Teen™ gives our teens a whole new way to wear braces for a "clearly" amazing smile!

Invisalign Teen has become a popular treatment because it provides an option for younger patients to achieve a straight, healthy smile, without anyone noticing! Unlike traditional metal braces, teens using the Invisalign Teen system can remove their aligners, allowing them to eat just about anything without worrying over damaging or breaking their braces.

The treatment period for Invisalign Teen varies from case-to-case. To learn more about these clear aligners, please contact us at (312) 368-8771 and we’ll answer any questions you may have about Invisalign Teen!

Invisalign® tips, from Drs. Gilleran & Van Fossen

Many people know that Invisalign is a fantastic solution to straightening your pearly whites. What few people know, though, is that just like traditional braces, Invisalign requires proper care to work effectively. Good oral hygiene is highly important, even when you are wearing something in your mouth that you can take out to eat with. It's still likely, however, that your aligners can build up plaque if not treated properly. When wearing your Invisalign aligners, Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen want you to ask yourself these three questions:

1. Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out any time you eat.

2. Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not necessary for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.

3. Am I brushing before putting my trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also simple: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

These are all very simple steps, and ultimately, they help to keep you building good oral habits. If you have any questions about Invisalign or your treatment here at Gilleran and Van Fossen DDS, we encourage you to give us a call at our convenient office located in the Chicago Loop!

Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen, supporting National Smile Month

Our friends at the American Dental Association discovered that a person's smile was important than their eyes, hair and body as the most important physical feature. After all, there's a big reason why Americans spend as much as they do each year on general and cosmetic dentistry each year: they want to look (and feel) great.

That brings us to June, also known as National Smile Month. It's a great time for Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen to remind all of our patients to practice good oral hygiene between your visits to our office.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to improve your oral health so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many, many years:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
* Floss everyday to clean between your teeth.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks.
* Visit Drs. Gilleran or Van Fossen regularly (usually every six months).

If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call at 312-368-8771. We hope you have a great rest of the week! Get out there and share your smiles with Chicago!

The importance of oral cancer screenings, from Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen

In our continuing efforts to provide the most advanced technology and highest quality care available to our patients, Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic Dentistry screens our patients for oral cancer. The fact is, every hour of every day in the U.S., someone dies of oral cancer, which is the sixth-most common diagnosed form of the disease. The five-year survival rate is only 50 percent, and oral cancer is one of the few cancers whose survival rate has not improved.

Early detection of pre-cancerous tissue can minimize or eliminate the potentially disfiguring effects of oral cancer and possibly save your life. Ask Drs. Gilleran or Van Fossen about a screening at your next appointment! In addition to oral cancer screenings, we offer complimentary blood pressure screenings, take-home test kits for testing your cholesterol level and snoring/sleep apnea appliances (we'll be discussing these individually in the near future).

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen, supporting National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Did you know the month of May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month? In 1983, President Ronald Reagan encouraged Americans to include more physical activity into our lives, and the reminder is even more significant today as people are more distracted by television, social networking, video games and working more hours. Living an active lifestyle can and does improve physical and mental health, productivity and overall well-being. The best part? It doesn’t have to take a lot of time or effort.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has provided these public health guidelines for your reference. The guidelines call for people to exercise one hour every day of moderate intensity physical activity (such as playing sports or brisk walking) or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous activity (jogging, jumping rope or dancing).

At Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic and General Dentistry, we always encourage our patients to exercise or participate in sports. However, we want to remind you to always wear a mouth guard or other forms of mouth or facial protection when doing so. To learn more about how often you should exercise, we recommend you check out these helpful tips, courtesy of our friends at the American Heart Association.

The results are in: Smile and you might just live longer!

Great news to report today! People with big smiles may actually live than those who don’t, according to a March 2010 study at Wayne State University in Michigan. Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen have known for quite some time that positive emotion has been linked to both physical and mental health, but researchers at the university did something quite interesting: they looked at photos of 230 ball-players who began their careers in baseball prior to 1950 and studied their smile intensity (ranging from big smile, no smile or partial smile).

The players' smile ratings were compared with data from deaths that occurred from 2006 through 2009. The researchers then took into account other factors that impact life longevity, including body mass index, career length and even college attendance.

The results? Researchers found that players who weren't smiling in the photos died at the average age of 72.9 years. Players with partial smiles lived to be 75. Those with big smiles, however, lived on average to be almost 80 years old!

Our take-away from this study? Smile now, smile often and you might just live longer! Have you been perfecting your smile by visiting Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic and General Dentistry every six months? If not, give us a call at 312-368-8771!

Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen, helping you save face this spring

April is almost upon us, and for Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen, that only means one thing: it’s once again time to remind our dear patients to protect their faces and pearly whites. After all, April, which is only two days away, is National Facial Protection Month. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, children, high-school athletes and adults will have more than 5,000,000 teeth knocked out in sporting events this year. Here are five tips from Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen to save face while having fun this spring. We hope you remember them when you’re out on the ball field:

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

We hope that helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic Dentistry by calling 312-368-8771. Stay safe!

Gilleran and Van Fossen, supporting National Nutrition Month!

March has arrived, and that can only mean one thing: it’s National Nutrition Month. Every March, Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen, as well as thousands of dentists and hygienists celebrate this occasion, and this year is no different. This March, our professional team at Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic Dentistry want you to think diabetes, obesity and periodontal disease, and how healthful eating and physical activity may improve periodontal health. Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen know small changes really can make a big difference, and the American Dietetic Association (ADA) has some advice on ways to start improving your diet this March:

Focus on fruits and veggies: Add a serving each day to one meal and increase it every few weeks. Adding more of these foods into your diet is important whether you buy frozen, fresh or organic.

Think fresh, think local: From Chicago's farmer’s markets to community-supported agriculture, you have many options to find new, fresh foods here in the Windy City.

It’s tempting, but…: If you have a sweet tooth, have fruit and yogurt for dessert. If you crave a snack in the afternoon, enjoy some trail mix or nuts.

Make every calorie count: When you are choosing between options, focus instead on the one with more of the vitamins and nutrients that you need. Sometimes, foods with fewer calories aren’t always the healthiest options.

Expand your horizons: Try a fish you’ve never eaten before or find a new vegetable recipe. By testing yourself, you might find new healthy favorites to add to your regular grocery list.

If you have additional questions about periodontal disease or keeping yourself and your mouth healthy, please give us a call!

In addition, we use digital X-rays, which minimize radiation exposure and offer the best diagnostic quality available. Lastly, Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen use use intra-oral cameras during treatment, which allow patients and insurance companies a close-up view of your pearly whites.

If you have any questions about the dental treatments we offer, or to learn more about paraffin wax hand treatment, OraVerse, digital X-rays or intra-oral cameras, please give us a call. We'd love to hear from you.

February is American Heart Month, from Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen

Did you know February is Heart Month? It’s a great time to take notice of the health of your heart, say Drs. Gilleran and Van Fossen. Cardiovascular disease remains American's number one killer, according to the American Heart Association. Studies have shown a correlation between gum disease and heart disease, underscoring the importance of good oral health care.

Visiting our office on a regular basis can help prevent gum disease or at least catch it in its early stages. And because people with dental insurance are more likely to visit their dentist when they should, a healthy mouth begins with a visit to Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic Dentistry. In observance of Heart Month, Drs. Van Fossen and Gilleran say it’s also important to know your numbers: blood pressure (less than 120/80), cholesterol (less than 200) and BMI (less than 25). If you have any questions about heart health, or about your treatment at Gilleran and Van Fossen Cosmetic Dentistry, please give us a call today.

Talking dairy and gum disease with Drs. Gilleran & Van Fossen

Is dairy a major part of your diet? If not, it should be! A 2008 study from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has found that regular consumption of dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, can lower your chances of contracting periodontal disease, or gum disease.

Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth that affects the gums and jaw. Gum disease results in a loss of teeth and bone, and has been connected to certain cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and osteoporosis.

Results of the study show that adults who consume at least 55 grams of lactic acid a day are less at risk for gum disease. Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. Next time you reach for a quick snack, choose some cheese, or a glass of milk, and remember with each bite, and every sip you are preserving your teeth for a lifetime of smiles and good oral health!

For more information about keeping your teeth healthy, give us a call at Gilleran & Van Fossen Cosmetic Dentistry. Or, you may post your questions here. Have a great rest of your Tuesday!
